8.8 vs 9"

i am running 39.5" trxus on my 90 f150 (i know the TTB cant handle that, thats why i am putting new front and rear axles) and am needing to know if i should put the 9" rear end out of an early 80's f150 on my truck or if i can safely keep the 8.8" i have now. i dont do any rock crawling, i live in louisiana, just run in the mud evey now and then, but i want to lock my rear end and run 456 or 488 gears in both dif's. will i kill the factory axle? thanks guys.

justin

p.s. i don't really want to go to 1 ton axles because i bought wheels without any forethought. i only have a 302, which will be replace by a (slightly) built 351 eventually so i am not going to have gobs of torque to break my axles.

go for the 9" no question about it, that 8.8 will break if you lock it and even wheel it light. the 9" is probably one of the best 1/2 ton axles made. for the front end you might want to think about putting some chromolly axle shafts in it.
