I just got a 03 explorer with 62,000 miles. My problem is that the engine has a ping/tick when the rpm's rev between 1000-2000. Seems like it is coming from the the middle/ middel back of the motor. Will do it while driving or if i just rev it in park. any ideas? it's driving me nuts. Thanks.
Do you have the 4.0 L SOHC V6 or the 4.6 L V8? Either way I suggest that you start by upgrading to a higher octane fuel and adding some Chevron Techron (I believe 1 and a half bottles will take care of the 22.5 gallon fuel tank on the Explorer). If that doesn't eliminate the problem, have your oil changed and if you haven't done a tuneup in a while, think about having it done seeing as you have a good amount of miles. If have the 4.6 L V8, this problem is well documented and there are several TSB's out for it, so if you're still under warranty you should be taken care of by the dealer. If you have the 4.0 L V6, the first thing that comes to mind is the well known timing chain issue associated with these engines. Good luck .
