just looking for some ideas of why i dont have reverse in my 99 explorer 4.0 ohv. the truck drives smoothly in all the gears but no reverse. when i rev the rpm up for sometimes the truck moves slightly backwards.
I had my truck repaired for the same thing, mine was slipping when you accelerated hard in reverse so I had it checked out.I was told reverse needs the most line pressure to engage the clutches and my pressure was low and fluctuating. They droped the valve body and found nothing wrong then suspected a seal in the transmission so riped it apart. It turned out the problem was a broken tab on the pressure regulating solenoid in the valve body so if they noticed that when they droped the valve body it might have only cost $ 300 instead of $1600....... since once the pulled the transmission appart they had to rebuild it with new seals etc.. Yeah that hurt.
I thought that L1 (low gear) is the same gear ratio as reverse. I'm not sure about this though. Do you have the same issue if you drive in L1? Others may be able to confirm/deny this assertion.
Also...
The first thing you need to do (which seems basic but I'm not trying to insult you) is to make sure the trans fluid is at the proper level. Check the fluid for browning/burning. These transmissions have wild performance issues if the fluid levels are off. It can't hurt to drop the pan, do the filter and gasket and refill with fresh fluid. Might be worth the $30.00 and the 1/2 hour to see if this helps before you have a shop drop your pan. That is usually $500.00 minimum!
Hey Gil i did all the basics changed fluid, filter, gasket, and the seals for the reverse servo and have no reverse. The low gear also works fine. I was wandering if there is a way the tighten the reverse band? or if or if not can a pressure regulator solenoid or a throttle pos. sensor be the vandal. Or im i looking at a rebuild trans.
Mine did it on my 98. Had to replace the tranny with a rebuild. Got on at Fod using a machine shp name for $1600 wit 3 yr 36 mo warranty. Best buy for my 140k machine.
Your situation is a little out of the scope of what I know about transmissions. I have done some minor work on the A4LD transmissions but really limited. Since you have covered the basics (and then some) and are still having this issue it looks to be more serious.
Are there any tranny specialists in your area that would be friendly to your cause? You seem to have some knowledge in mechanics but need the proper diagnosis. Anyone you trust to have a quick look and steer you in the right direction?
Like a lot of Automatics, all of the clutches engage when you go to reverse, so any slipping clutch, or low line pressure, will delay or prevent engagement... time for a rebuild.

I'm in the UK and had a lot of difficulty finding anybody that knew about my 5r55e but I finally did.
He said that although 1st & reverse use the same clutches on most auto trannies, the 5r55e uses 3rd & reverse.
There have been several TSBs for this transmission identifying & fixing several bugs. Check them out in the "recalls & TSBs" section here on the forum and see if any of them tally with ALL of your problems. There may well be a good, documented fix.
