How to install cam sensor

Hey guys I'm just wondering if anybody can tell me how to install the cam sensor on my 2000 PSD instead of getting raped by the dealer. Where is it under the hood? What tools will I need? How long will it take? Thanks for any input or advice!

I haven't chagned one yet myself, but take a look on page three of the threads for this one:

"Problem...intermittent dying"

There's a diagram, directions and tools.

It took me longer to find the darn thing than it took to actually change it.
Facing the front of the truck it is on the lower lefthand side. Front of the engine, near the crank pulley.

Requires a 10mm socket I believe, and a short extension was helpful. Took a bit of leverage to get it out. I put fresh motoroil on the new cps seal and popped it in. Tighten the nut and all done.

It's on the front of the motor, at about a 11:00 position on the pulley for the crankshaft. It has a 3 wire plug to it. It's held in place with a 10mm bolt that you can easily get to with a socket and an extension. I change mine from under the truck. It may take you 20-30 minutes the first time you do it, but it will get quicker once you do it one or two times. The old one may be pretty tough to get out too. The o-ring tends to swell and make it fit really tight. You may have to get a screwdriver in there to try and pry it out or get some pliers on it to twist it out.

When I changed my CPS, I could not get enough leverage to pull it out easily. I went to pliers and promptly broke the black plastic connector. After much struggling and cursing, I went to the old WD-40 and zapped the little gap I had been able to create. Slid right out after that.

How about a truck thats lifted? I'm only up 3" but theres no way I can get to it from below lying on my back. Guess when the time comes I'll have to attack it from the top, right? Any tips/suggestions?

Mine's got a 2" lift on the front, and I can still get it out from underneath. It takes some stretching, but it's by no means difficult.

Boy, I don't think you can get to it from the top. Even without a lift, my truck's CPS was in an in-between position where I had to use my neglected abs to hold my shoulders off the ground to wrestle with the thing. I finally got one of my wife's workout mats and that helped me reach without my stomach cramping up and my neck screaming at me. Boy, I better hit the gym. I looked at it from the top, but that looked like contortion city.

The best time to replace the CPS is while also doing the water pump. While the pump is off, wa-laaa, the CPS is "right there".

But I didn't need to change it then, so I didn't.
