My dad off of EBAY purchased about 4 years worth of a magazine called PSR, Powerstrike Registry for me when I purchased my truck. In the back they have a question and answer section. In one of the questions a person said he had a 2000 4x4 CC diesel but wasn't getting near the MPG that his friends identical truck was getting. The reply by the "Expert" was that Ford offered 2 types of computer packages. They had one called the "Off-Road" chip that gave more power, but not as good MPG. The "Expert" told the person to go back to Ford and have them reprogram his chip to the "CARB" program for much better gas mileage. Has anybody ever heard of this? Obviously the cost from a local dealer would be ridiculous and I would probably just pony up the money and talk with Jody at DP Tuner but I was just curious.
This is very intresting. My friend and I have the same truck F350 7.3 CC Dually. He gets 15-16 around town. Mine gets 12-13. I am confuzed about that myself. Does anyone know the computer codes that would get better MPG.
There are quite literally dozens of different stock programs out there. Normally they are just upgrades in a certain programming family. PMT0, PMT1, PMT2, etc. Sometime the updates are put out to comply with the ever changing emissions standards, sometimes to address a specific operating concern, and yes, they also can change the power output or economy.
I've never heard of a dealer changing an "off-road" program to a "carb" program, nor am I even aware of the existance of said programs. A dealer reflash is normally a bad idea because if for whatever reason you do not like the newer program, they will not put the old one back on.
I don't know if that's exactly right, but there were optional "flashes" (programming) that came on the pickups, My 2000 came with "high altitude" programming, or at least that's what it says on the factory window sticker.
