FORDMUSCLE magazine did a writeup on the Jacobs ignition in their 67 mustang and 5.0 mustang, I found it interesting they got a 20% improvement over stock and 1.5-2mpg increase over a MSD ignition in the 67, and the 5.0 went almost 2/10's of a second faster on it's ET's.
The article said they had trouble with the advance and they had to set base timming higher. Then they claim great performance and better MPG? I'd like to see the results after the unit is working properly. Nice to see they have a revlimiter built in, but their prices are still pretty high.
Hello,
I read that article on the link provided. It sounded more like a ad for MSD than a write up of Jacobs. I have been contemplating the chnge from the original Duraspark II. Sounds as if performance is increased by using the MSD unit, as that was what they were originally running. Any differences were slight when changing to the Jacobs, however sounds like they had a time finding out why it acted that way and as a solution to run a Duraspark II as a slave to the Jacobs is ridiculous. I would have rather the Manufacturer recommend their distributor or a kit to swap the magnetic pickup out to one with a hotter signal.

I have Jacobs ignition on two of my trucks, both use the duraspark distributer, an LX101 trigger box from standard motors, and the Jacobs computer. A duraspark is the best distributer for your ford, there is no such animal as a hotter signal from a magnetic pickup. For a good healthy spark you must increase the current to the coil, which is what the jacobs brain box (and MSD, and Crane and everyone else) does. I am very happy with mine, one truck used to have TFI ignition and one had points. One has to remember that ignition, in and of itself, will not add horse power if you stock setup is adequate. Where the aftermarket ignition really shines is on a modified engine that the stock ignition is not strong enough for, and both of mine have been tweaked. DF
DF, I realize a modified engine would benefit more from an ignition upgrade, but Jacobs claims more power and economy with their systems. My results, no noticable power increase, and if anything WORSE mileage. Keep in mind, though, thats been my kind of luck with such things, money spent, no gains, maybe its me!
I just put Jacob's mileage master on my 78 f150 and noticed a huge difference. It cut out the rough idle and cured a hesitation i had when I floored it. I also noticed more power, but I haven't had it long enough to check the mileage difference. I'll keep you posted
decisions decisions, I cant decide if I want to lower my truck and get 3.00:1 gears or get a Jacobs kit with my tax refund. Especially since I read that article
