aligning front clip - ????

The front clip on my '53 F100 isn't sitting square. The driver's side is about 1" lower when measured from the chassis rail to the bottom of the cutout on the valance. The rods in the engine compartment don't seem to effect this raising of the sides as much as they do squaring of the sides.

How do you install and square up the front clip? The service manual is useless.

i don't know if this is correct, but i used a few washers under the low side of the radiator support. mine wasn't an inch off, but it was low on one side.

Scott: Do you have a picture of how its sitting? I didn't see one in your gallery. I wonder if a rubber mount is missing on one side or something.

I have used the washer idea on cars with tweaked frames (from accidents), but none that were that far off. 1" is a lot.

I agree, some pictures would sure help, and some more details about the clip.

Do a search, I did a post not too long ago on front end sheetmetal alignment. Everything hangs/squares off the radiator support horseshoe. Make sure you have good/new rubber mounts underneath and square it to the cowl first without anything attached. Keep checking it as you add parts. Don't tighten any sheetmetal until you have it all aligned.

Is the cab plumb, square, level and otherwise in cosmic alignment with the frame. That is step one. The rest of your life will suck if it's not.

So THAT'S my problem.... I always figured it was a Karma thingy or some archiac black magic voodoo curse that someone had conjured up on me for mistreating cats in my youth...I always pictured somewhere there was a little shrunken Mr Potato Head of me with pins in it....

never occured to me that something as simple and mundane as fender washers could have that large an effect on my total life experience ??? dang it

I'm sad now BUT in a completely funky way, happy also thanks "D"

later
John ( cool but uncharacteristically sucky )
