Getting Warm

Gentlemen, I just love my 96 powerstroke. Up until now the temperature has always stayed below the "N" in Normal. Now however the gauge is starting to show the engine getting a little warm........nothing over the middle of the gauge yet.......but now I have noticed that if I go slow.......it stays real cool.......when I speed up to 65 or so it starts getting warm.......when I slow down it gets cool again........any ideas. I keep the coolant changed and a new radiator was put in two years ago.....about 200,000 on the engine

kinda sounds like a tstat sticking partially open. not closed all the way at low speed and not opening enough at high speed.

Thanks for the post..........on a 96 just where is the thermostat located........On the end of the upper radiator hose there is a metal tube like housing that looks like it goes into the water pump.......is the thermostat between the end of the tube like housing and the water pump?

thats where its at

the 203 t stat works great in theese trucks the only place that has the right one is dieselsite it has to be a long stem tstat the short wont work right. may as well buy a new tstat housing while you have that one off the tstat housing is lame and usually leaks if reused

Definatly change the tube or it'll leak. I got mine at oreillys for under $10.

What advantage is the higher temp tstat? My 96 runs very cool and always has, almost never above the "N". I've never had a problem with it running this way, but do notice the exhust valve is annoying in the winter until the truck warms up. Will a 203 tstat warm the truck up faster and prevent the valve from closing as often?

thanks,
Jeff

You took the words right out of my mouth. I also have a '96 and with a bra over the entire grill, it might just touch the 1st bar in the normal range. I unplugged the temp wire that goes into the air box (plastic thingy) and the exhaust valve doesn't do that anymore!! Wicked annoying!!!

My truck seems to run cool also. I have heard the 203 thermostat makes the 7.3L run better and even pick up MPG. Sounds good, but I have yet to try it. Has anyone who has done this upgrade noticed an improvement aside from having hotter air for the defroster?!

Diesels love heat. The higher the combustion temprerature you can maintain, the more efficient they become. Every notice how loudly your engine knocks on cold mornings? I'd run a 210 thermostat if I could get one.
