Speakeasy allows you to test your speed with test sites in many areas of the country...as TorqueFirst says, your speed depends on distance from the server. I am using the latest technology from Verizon, FiOS. It's fiber optics cable right to the house. Cat 5 inside the house. I opted to buy the 15Mb service as it was the closest in price to my former provider, Comcast. They (Comcast) promised good service, but when it came down to my complaint of slow speed and their advertisements of much faster than I was getting, they wouldn't help, saying it my MY problem, I went with Verizon. They spend 4 hours here at my house installing, then testing, to insure I got what I was buying. They also connected and tested my second computer at no extra charge. ( I had already run the Cat 5 to it). My speed is now, using Speakeasy, to Washington DC and NYC, over 14.8 Mbs! Upload speed is much better too, 1777 kbps!

Got spoiled by Roadrunner in Austin, but now out here in the country satalite is our only choice. I miss my 3/5 meg speed. Anyone Know if there is sat service better than Direcway? Or why AOL is so slow?
If you have there home service, your right on the money as far as speed. Took this right from there website:
DIRECWAY speeds are based on download speeds of up to 1 Mbps for DIRECWAY Professional service and 700 Kbps for DIRECWAY Home service. Stated speeds not guaranteed.

I friend of mine has Direcway, he has told me he speed will vary depending on time of day and weather conditions.
as far as AOL is concerned, that is just AOL for you.
