Many good comments, but I have to wonder what our forefathers did in the 1700's when they were clearing acres and acres of trees with none of our modern mechanics.
They rent stump grinders from Home Depot very cheaply ($45-80 depending on your area) and it takes about 45 minutes for most stumps using their grinder. If you are in no rush during the slow season (winter) you can usually find places to do it for $50 too.
The last 2 for me were for neighbors, Now you just cant beat rolling up to their stump with the 454 rumbling in a 3/4 ton short bed putting front tires against the curb, setting the E brake climbing out with the remote control for the 12,000 lb winch and a cold Sam Adams, cabling to the stump and ripping it out of the ground.
sory my other truck is a '77 chevy
please don't flame me too bad!
I (we) removed a dead oak tree that was 31" in diameter at the base.
Bored four 1 1/2" holes 8" deep 2' from the ground, packed in 3.5 pounds C-4. Tree removed!, house windows gone! The outside of the house was redwood, now redwood with oak splinters embedded. Five to ten pound chunks of wood were found 200 yards away, the house was around 150 yards away. This was at the ranch so no neighbors or injuries just alot of dead beer cans before and after.
"Use enough dynamite there Butch?"

How big is the stump? Cedar stump grind out very easy. It may be cheaper than you think. At least call a company for a quote.

Me and Matt know a thing or two about removing stumps... i own a tree service here in MN and my best advice is to NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY on that stump acid crap. i ground out a stump last year for a lil old lady, the stump was rotted and had the holes drilled in it for the acid... she told me that tree fell over in a storm in 1982 ( the same year i was born ) so much for the acid stump remover eh?
so just call a tree service and have them give you a FREE estimate on the cost of grinding it out. once they are done you can take the chips and scatter them in the woods to rot, or have the guys clean them up. i own a stump grinder and i can tell you... for the cost of renting a stump grinder to remove one tree stump, you can usually have a pro come do it for about the same price.
We recut the Jeep trails and pond every 5 years with the neighbors D-4 cat, it did a nice job of removing what's left of the splintered oak trunk. Now the damaged house well that's a reminder of of bad thinking day.

All the people who recommend removing the stump with a superduty remind of one thing and one thing only. A clip from America's Funniest Home Videos where a guy was doing just that - until the chain snapped free and broke out the rear window on the truck. Which is damn funny...as long as it it's not your truck.
txpsd--ya-so long as someone aint sitting in the truck--beemer nut--"think you used enough dynamite there ,butch"--now that theres funny---dang good movie too----and pieces of oak splinters in siding--priceless!!!!!!!!
i would go with built tough f250 on this . i dont use grinders myself as im a small tree firm . they are not very practical here as people have small yards and the alley ways to them are too narrow .i normally dig around and axe out the roots and if theres room rip them out with my f250 .
My dads friend was a catskinner for weyerhuaser and he used to dig a hole under the
stumps and load it with dinomite and boom. One time on a 8ft plus diameter stump it
took 5 sticks, only cuz the first four failed, the fifth time it went and turned it into sawdust and knocked us on our butts.
