i have a 1978 ford f150 4x4. One my front driveshaft u-joints keep popping off when i put it in 4 wheel drive or the cv joint keeps hitting the bar under the transfercase and transmission. Second we just got the car working and it ran but every morning it will turn over and either cut off or if you rev it it will rev and then cut off. Then after doing that a while it starts. When we drive it though i can make it about 200 ft and then i loose all acceleration but the car continues to run. then when i stop it either sounds bad or shuts off. I can turn the car right back on but only get about 20 ft until it does the same thing. could it be the spark plugs or something else.

dude this really stinks.replace the square box [brain] on the wheel well mounted next to the hood hinge on the drivers side.kinda expensive but this should fix your dying problem.does the truck have a lift on it? if not you will need to unbolt the drive shaft at the diff and hold the other shaft at the the cv joint then pull it apart you mite need to un screw the the thingamajigger. then seperate it.if it falls out in just a short pull. bout an inch then you will need a longer one made for it.if that does not seem to be the problem. then check to make sure that the bolt that holds you leaf springs together is not broken.if it is then that would cause it to slide as ya accelerate thus pulling it apart.if its lifted then you will need a longer one made. no ifs ands or butts about it.good luck i hope this helps.

Would the Duraspark control box create a problem so quickly? I would think that the control box wouldn't become a problem until the engine compartment heated up. And the engine compart shouldn't heat up after 200 ft. I'm not 100% sure on this, I don't have the control box.

My first thought would be a fuel delivery problem. There could be something blocking the fuel pickup in the tank or possibly a clogged fuel filter.

Who knows?

My 77 f150 did the same thing your truck is doing. I thought it was the fuel filter but it was the dura spark box on the drivers inner fender.

Couple of things, the driveshaft may have to replaced with one that doesn't have the CV in it(my 79 F-150 4x4 won't take one), or you will have to notch the crossmember to clear. For the start but not really run problem, try the voltage regulator on the pass. fender. When mine went it would do very funny things like let me drive for anywhere from a couple of blocks to a couple of miles then would almost idle but not quite, but wouldn't shut off either, just would not take any pedal. If I let it "rest" for awhile, it would start right up and let me get home at least. Last time I got one it was only 10 bucks or so, might be worth a shot before the "box". Most in this era use these unless it has a high output alt., the one from my 83 Ranger is the same as my 79 F-150, so you might swap one from another vehical to check. It has a flat plug with 3 or 4 wires in the plug and is about 3" square, with about 1/2" of height mounted with two screws on the ears, at least in the trucks.
