The latches on both sides are jammed. For a while it was just one side and the gate would still close but now the other has gone.
Is there a way to take apart the tailagte to get at the mechanism? Ive tried pulling, wiggling and lubricating from the outside but it doesnt really budge.
My tailgate has a access panel on the bed side, with screw fastners on it's cover, that will allow access.
The latches on both sides of my 99 Ranger, were sticking where they make contact with & slide on the latch & gate.
After loosening them up I buttered on a light coating of "SuperLube" grease, it's lightly PTFE loaded & it's been fine for two years now.
If it's really wet or high humidity where you live, use a good grade marine grease, that you'd use on trailer wheel bearings & remember, "a little dab will do yah"!!!!
I used this green gooey grease with Teflon/moly whatever a feew eons ago and opened it up 2 weeks ago to install a Pop Lock and it was still wet adn slippery at the latch to arm connection on each side.
The rods to each latch an develop a surface corrosion (like Aluminum whitning) that can almost freeze the metal at the latch connection.
Clean w/ WD and then coat with marine gradr product using a swap or such to ensure you get the stuff between the flanges at the latch connection.
