I am going to the junkyard this weekend to look for a 4bbl intake for my FE. Are there certain casting numbers to look for on the intake to make sure it is an FE? I saw a couple trucks today that had the 390 code on the vin but want to make sure.
Also, which carb should I get, Holley Street Avenger 670 or Edelbrock 650? I have a 68 2wd F-100 with a 360. Eventual goal is just good overall power, reliability, smooth running and low maintenance. I don't have a lot of experience fine tuning carbs.
I'd look for an "S" code 390 intake. They're usually in cars. They're easy to spot due to the large S cast into one of the runners. Keep your eyes open though. These things have been around for quite a while, and it's not uncommon to find someone's project vehicle with an aluminum intake on it. I got a deal on a Streetmaster 390 this way.
OK I should have read the forums first, I answered the carb question by reading a little further, any help on the intake #'s would still be appreciated though.
The "S" intakes were originally designed for the 65 T-birds low hood line. T-bird parts would often be marked with a S or SE in the part numbers. 5K21 is the date code of 65/Oct/21. The S intakes are pretty common and sell for around the money you paid.
well, the other common iron intake is a "T" usually on trucks. pay attention because there are 2bbl "T" intakes. While the "s" is better than the "T" its a slight advantage, the "s" is 1.82 by 1.16 and the "t" is 1.75-1.78 by 1.16.
The best iron intakes are the 428 cj and are like c80e-c or something like that.
BTw, the 670 street avenger is better than edelbrock imo.
I went to Colorado auto salvage in Englewood CO, couldn't find anything, any other recommendations in or around Denver? I may have one buried in my Moms garage from years ago but might be easier to just find a good Ford yard around here.
