Service engine light, no codes??? CPS !!

Scenario, 2001, 6637, 4" Exhaust, Diablo Predator, 100K mi. The truck lately has died at idle for no apparent reason, a couple of times recently. I did not think much about it until recently. I took a trip of about 400 mi. during the trip the truck stumbled or hiccupped a few times, this was at speeds of 75 mph. The service engine light came on, stopped to get something to eat, shut the truck off, when I restarted the truck the service engine light was off.

I arrived home and tried to check for trouble codes, there were none. It was a misty day, but not really raining hard.

Is this an indication of a CPS going bad or should I be looking in another direction.

Thanks in advance for the help,

Perry

I would replace the CPS soon. It will leave you stranded on the side of the road and you'll wind up having to by one from Ford for $200.

At minimum I would buy a CPS and keep it along with a flashlight, 10 mm socket, 3/8 ratchet and medium extension in the truck in case the CPS fails completely. Heck I do that anyway and am still on the original CPS at 75K. There is a good chance that the CPS is the problem based on personal experience with my son's 2001 PSD and failure of his CPS and other posters. You can get a CPS from IH for about $100 or off e-bay for about $60 - $80 if you don't have to have one right now. Changing the CPS takes about 15 minutes in the comfort of your garage but depending on the weather, location, time of day, etc., can take much longer than that out on the open road.

I recently threw a few codes on my truck and tried to have them retrieved via hand held scanner. Some of these cannot retrieve a stored code. Had to take it to a shop to run a diagnostic on it and they pulled the codes just fine. If you triggered the SES light, you have the codes stored. Just plug it to a machine that can retrieve it properly.

I agree with the others, sounds like CPS failure is coming soon.

The scenario seems to only happen when it is wet outside. It has been dry in OK since the trip I took. It finally rained today and guess what, the truck stumbled several times on the way home from work.

I drive 25 mi. to and from work, 75 mph. Would this still be the CPS ??

The truck has run fine for three weeks, during the dry period. It did not turn on the service engine light this time, but it was a prounounced stumble.

Hope someone can give me some input.

Thanks,
Perry
