Hi all Wondering if somoene can help me? My Dad has a 03 250 with a 5.4 about 30k miles Recently its started to lose power and stumble above 2500 RPM. We checked the fuel pressure 30lbs at idle and replaced the filter. The filter was partially plugged, Replaced filter ran fine for a while started acting up again, rechecked filter it was OK. My guess is the pump pickup screen is plugged Can a person blow back with Mild air pressure to flush the pump screen or is there a check valve? Check engine light is on now. Havent pulled codes assuming its a lean condition caused by fuel starvation. Also I must note My Dad is a rancher he fills from a farm service tank which was filled almost immediatley before he topped off his truck, There is no filter on the service tank which leads me to believe that his pickup screen is plugged. Anyone with a suggestion or idea please let me Know he uses this thing everyday! 70 miles plus its cold up here too! No local Ford service shops either! Thanks in advance
you wont be able to and dont want to blow air into the line to clear a pick screen the air would have to go trough the pump first and i dont think it will plus you may cause damage to teh pump. if i were you i would check the codes first before you start pulling gas tanks. it could be a coil and ford dose seem to have alot of coil problems. If you do get a lean code i would then check fuel volume. this is easy to check at the test port on the fuel rail. if your volume is low then i would go after the pick up screen in the tank also i would change the pmp whiele you are in there. the other thing you want to check is fuel pressure on accel make the pump is keping up with the damand of the engine.
if you have to go into the gas tank i have found it is easier to pick the bed than drop the tank.
My 2002 e350 5.4 van 90,000 miles, just started doing this too and notice it most 45 & above in cruise ,in overdrive & lightly accelerating .( tried with od off, same symptoms) Not very bad under full throttle. & just cruising around town with steady speed up to 40 mph not bad either. just on acceleration bumps & bangs pretty good, like a real bad chatter from a clutch. No SES light. I understand there is a tsb for a reflash on pcm. Trying to get that now but cant beleive it will fix this sympyon. It seems only stealership can only update & they say I may have to leave it a couple of days. (busy) Repaced fuel filter & still the same. Any one else have problem like this?
yeah my 01 4.6l started stumbling at around 40 mph and 70 mph towards the end when it got real bad, changed the spark plugs looked at the worst plug and changed that coil on pack and that fixed the problem.
Before pulling the tank down it may be easier to remove the fuel rail and check for debris in the fuel injectors. Sometimes what happens is what ever junk that clogged your fuel filter makes it past and settles in the injectors inlet. You can clean them out carefully with a small pick and some carb cleaner. Be careful not to push any junk into the small ports in the injector. Buy some injector o-rings prior to removing.
Still no ses light . Took to stealership & they said #5 coil culprit. I cant beleive it is only one coil bad but it did fix my problem. Thanks everyone for input because I told them I thought was a COP due to internet forum buz.
Bruce
Yes ! The autoparts place said "they sell many COP's' so I figured you were on target. I wish I could have changed out myself but didn't now which coil & did not want to mess with plugs (possibility of more problems). AND cant get contorted enough to even see the coils ,much less work on them . I dont know how dealer did it. Wish I could have watched.
Thank again, Bruce
