I have a 94 F-150 4x4 w/ a 4.9, M5OD tranny, BW1356 T-case, and 3.08 gears w/ open differentials (axle code 18) in the stock axles. I was muddin' yesterday (first time in this truck) and my buddy said I had rooster tails coming off all 4 tires (in 4 HI). I thought with open diffs only the tires with less traction would spin. Did they all spin because they all had equal traction? I honestly figured I would get stuck b/c of the open diffs.
usually open diffs mean getting stuck. sometimes the mud is bad -or good- enough though. If you werer going through with speed then you should most likely have 4 roostertails.
Agreed. If all tires had fairly equal traction then all 4 will throw mud. During normal drive both tires get torque. It's only 1 tire that gets torque when the opposite tire gets little to no traction.
well, I am going to be putting a 4" suspension lift, 33x13.5x15" Interco LTBs on 15x10 steel wheels, and 3.73 gears front and rear. As for the differentials, I'm putting a Power Loc up front and a Detroit Locker in the rear. I'm also swapping out the auto hubs for Warn Premiums. I was mostly just amazed that I didn't get stuck at all with the open diffs. I have 32x 11.50" Cooper mud tires on there now, and was in mud up over the tires, and didn't get stuck. I even have little mud trails flowing down my tranny hump in the cab from where it came in around the gear shift boot! lol. Good thing its a XL and not an XLT
He could get away with welding the front but the rear if you dont mind a little extra tire wear get a locker if not get a posi. Im not a fan of welding at all though. Do it right and you will never have a problem.
