I have 2006 F250 SD 5.4,6 speed manual,RWD,standard cab. I love the truck, but it is terrible on upstate NY roads (including an icy uphill driveway) despite studded tires and over 500#'s of weight over the rear axle. What would it involve installing some sort of rear end that would give some positive traction. Some thing that would limit the spinning of just one rear tire. Would a total rear axle replacement be the answer or are there replacable gear sets that can be purchased. I realize that 4WD would be the ultimate solution, but that would not be possible at this time. Thanks in advance for all responces.
The things you have done so far to improve your traction woes are good. Here is a site that explains all you would ever want to know about locking up your rear end.
Eaton makes a good unit that will fit. It is an electric locker. Unlocked its a limited slip and a flip of a switch turns it into a full locker. (spool) They claim it can be used in Front or Rear axle applications.
Any decent shop can install another rear diff including the Ford dealer.
Tires also play a big role in traction. A basic rule of thumb is tires that come stock from the factory suck.
