I was stuck the other day, put my truck into 4X4, and the back tire were spinning, but the front were not moving. I checked and the front drive shaft is turning. The hubs are auto locking. Any suggestions on where to start with this? Also how are the hubs engaged? electrically, air, what? I prefer the old days where I had to get out and manually lock the hubs in. At least then I knew it was working.
Your hubs might be blown. I had that same problem with my '93 F-150. I have heard a lot about the automatic hubs going bad on many Fords. So what I did was replace the stock automatic locking ones with a manual set from Warn. They are a lot better and I can feel that I can trust them more than the automatics.
And if I am not mistaken, I believe that the hubs get engaged electrically. But dont quote me on that.
They are either mechanical or vacume I cannot remeber on that truck. A set of warns will run you about 100 bucks at advanced auto. I would go ahead and convert to manual. I am pretty sure that it is a direct swap, might have to buy the conversion kit but it is very simple.
