i have a 91 f250 4x4 and im replacing the front rotors, bearings and brakes. im not sure which front axle i have. there is a big 50 cast into the front carrier does that mean i have a d50? it has 8 lugs and a large hub lock and that alone i think eliminates it being a d44 right ? i replaced the locking hubs before but i forgot which axle i got them for .
The reason im questioning this is because i just got all the parts for the d50 axle and the inner bearing will not go on. the rotors are right or seem to be but the inner bearings will not slide back onto the spindle without bashing them on with a BFH. i double checked the part number for the inner bearings and it is the correct one for a d50. and the inner seal fit into the hub perfect which also is for a d50 axle. i figured there was a bur or something on the spindle so i hit it quick with some fine emery cloth but still no go. any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance.
You either have a Dana 44 HD or a Dana 50. Both were available. If you have a supercab, it's a Dana 50. That was standard. You also have a 50 if the truck came with a snowfighter package, which you probably wouldn't know unless you had bought the truck new.
If it's got a "50" cast into it, it sure sounds like a Dana 50 to me. Can you take the inner bearing out and slide it onto the spindle? Is it just too small? Where did you get the bearings from? If you bought cheap bearings at autozone or Kragen, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't fit even if they were the correct part.
Another way to tell is if the hub fills the entire hole in the rim, it's a Dana 50.
i actually bought the inners from 2 different stores and neither will fit on the axle and both were for the d50 axle. yes the hub fills the entire center of the rim. i have only tried them on the driver side but i am gonna go back out now and pull the passenger side ant try them on there and see what happens.
remember there are 2 Dana 50's! One is a 4000lb and the other is a 4800lb, you can look at the hubs and tell; the latter (larger) has tapered hubs, the other has straight hubs like the F150, you'll find this out when you go to replace the Ball joints, the person at the Advance Auto/ Autozone will likely give you the wrong ball joints if you have the larger hubs .
