school me on locking hubs 2014

New f240 2014 shift on the fly 4x4. Whats the deal with the front hubs,

how does the system work?

when i turn the dial for shift on the fly i can feel it is engaged but the hubs are not locked ( i think ) i still have to get out and lock the hubs?

Or if i lock the hubs now it turns into a locker, and both axles are lock and get power at the same time ? Will.

shift on the fly or ESOF as it is called is what you have.

vacuum operated to lock the hubs and an electric shift motor for the transfer case.

The hubs have two positions. Auto and lock.
Auto means they are disengaged till you turn the switch.

Lock is an alternate way should the vacuum system fail. You can get out and manually turn the hub to lock and then turn your switch to 4Hi and go. It is a redundant feature.

Neither method turns the front end into a locker differential. The front diff is an open diff so you can turn the front wheels.

You can use it any time. I use mine in 4x2 when I need just a little bit more traction when I pull my boat up a wet boat ramp...

Newer trucks have either a LS Limited slip diff or the electronic locker, you're window sticker and owners manual can tell you how to operate it.

Also the the dealers credit, we didn't set it up because it was a long day for me and the dealer they were moving cars all day and a big storm was coming in and it was snowing. I don't live that far and don't mind waiting to set it up. But if i could do it myself i would. Will
