Stock Muffler
Im just going to take off the stock muffler and install an FM 50 or 70 series.
Any helpfull tips on this?
Thanks ~Gage~
it's welded on at both ends ,plus the rear muffler hanger is welded to the mufflers case not the pipe.
best if you have the stock muffler pipe system removed and save it as a just incase you don't like the sound of what you put on,
fm 40 and 50's tend to reverb inside the truck so do some others , banks and a fm 70 seem to be the best bet . i tryed a 40 a 50 and went back to my custom bent 70 sysytem with a 4 inch chrome tip at the end , and i did loose some mpg's over the stock system on my 05 3 valve motor and it does have a ricer like sound at some rpm area's
There are combinations that can add power and MPG but there are just as many ways to move the torque curve up in the band and loose average low rpm power and that will cost in higher MPG at cruise RPM. (foot is deeper in the throttle to get same power as before modification)
The days of getting rid of the very restrictive cast iron header and bolting on a set of equal length short or long tube headers, increasing the 1 3/4 inch exhaust pipes to 2" or 2 1/4" and finding a butt load of hidden power are all gone. Ford engineers had to get the most power and MPG possible out of the motor. Yes there are a few ponies still hidden in there, but they are very elusive and can cost a lot to find.
Take a look at the exhaust manifold on the 05 V10. It actually has ports that slope back towards the exit. Not just a square chunk of cast iron like the 99-04 manifolds. It may not be as good as a header but it has to help flow some what. Gage, just infront of the muffler, about a foot is the clamp joint. Take it appart there.
we just custom made every thing from that point back. solid rod welded to the pipes onto the stock hangers. other then the f.m. 70 and the bigger tip it all matches the stock bends . yes it's a little deeper at idle more so at w.o.t. to say i'm a big block like sound. very little vibration inside compared to a f.m. 40 and 50 series.

how correct about the 05/6 exhaust manifolds. i have ford racing headers, no differnce on the dyno rollers till way up stairs in rpm. and then it was only a gain of 5hp.not worth the cash it cost over the stock cast iron. the freer flowing exhaust was worth only 2 hp. as fred states it cost's a lot to play , ford has pulled most of it out already.
torqe that you can get more onto the ground. ford has a reduction program built into the pcm to help save the trans. in the lower gears.
NOTE DON"T play with that on a stock trans. the clutch packs can't handle it. with out a increase in line pressure across the board.

If anything im going to install an FM 70 and see what it sounds like.
Thanks captchas
From someone with a straight thru 'preformance' muffler; get the FM70 or something very similar in resonance squelching baffles. Lots of guys like 4" or 5", 18" long tips, they say they add a nice rumbly sound.
But no matter what you do it will never sound 'different', or sound like a V8. Ken
