Currently redoing my 64 F100. The original speedometer in the dash housed the gas level, oil pressure, and some other gages I can't remember. The questions are: 1. Has anyone used the original gage panel to mount new gages in (thus updating the gages in their truck from the stock all in one speedometer to something newer)? 2. Has anyone (and I'm sure someone has) made a wooden gage panel to replace the original aluminum one (thus allowing them to mount their own gages in it)?

Chris, I think that the hardest thing is finding replacement gauges the same size. If you have the talent and patience then make you some wooden ones, it will be challenging.

My 65 has a set of Stewart Warner guages; the tach and speedometer are a large diameter with the other four (fuel, temp, oil press and voltage) in smaller diameter guages. The stock outside metal bezel is used with a textured grey panel insert to hold the guages, the panel is about 3/16 " thick. Decorative bolts hold the panel to the bezel It must have been a kit since the edges are finished with this grey vinyl-type covering. From what I see (done by the previous owner) you would need to use thin veneered plywood or a composite product to avoid warping. I would suggest using tempered masonite with a real wood veneer glued over the final panel. That would allow you to also finsh the cut edges with veneer if you so wish.

Chrome metal dashes are very rare, better time would be spent at truck shows and swap meets.

Chris,
dakota Digital sells an LED display cluster that will fit into the stock hole. It also includes Speedo, Oil, amp, and gas all in the same cluster. It is listed as being for a bronco, but they are the same size. It is very pricey but you might want to check it out anyway.

How would something like this work?

You just cut out the circles on the sides, and add your guages.
On mine above, there is an oil pressure guage on the left, and an amperage meter on the right. This way you keep the original look, with modern conveniences.

LAST EDITED ON 17-Jan-01 AT 11:46 PM (EST)[p]Andrew that is a very good look. I was thinking about doing that to my truck but I don't know what to use to cut the holes.
