Shorter Pushrods

I found out that I had a bent pushrod in number 2 cylinder so I replaced it the number 2 cylinder was dead it had no compression so I figured out that it had no compression because the new pushrod was to long thats why the old one was bent.So I now know that i need a shorter pushrod than standard lenght. But my problem is that where I live no part store can get me a shorter pushrod unless I have there supplyer custom make one for lots of dollars.I put in some new lifters in the number 2 cylinder and while there I checked to see how much vavle lash I had so I put the lifters in without primeing them and pushed down on the pushrod and It had no give the other one's had about .09 of lash which is normal but this one wouldnt budge so I figure I am going to have to get a rod about .07 to .09 shorter than standard length.Where can I get shorter pushrods. Can anyone tell me why this one cylinder is so different why the pushrod on this cylinder the other one's could stand to be a bit shorter but no where near the number 2 cylinder. If anyone could shead some light on this for me I would be thankful.

I had a bad lifter bend two rods, and also a timing chain skip a tooth and bend two pushrods. I don't see how you could bend only one rod on a cylinder unless you had the wrong rods to begin with. Interesting.

The 428 and 390 take the same rod for the same rocker type (adj / non-adj) Some 428 and 390's had adj rockers and the rod for these are different from the non-ajd rockers. Other than that they take the same rod. The actual length depends on any machining that was done, I think the standard length is 9.59 for 68~76 and 9.62 for 64~68. If you have problems with these lengths I'd check for stuck or bad lifters.

LAST EDITED ON 07-Apr-01 AT 10:38 AM (EST)[p]Thats what I thought at first is that I had a stuck lifter so I put two new lifter in the cylinder thats giving me the troulbe and still the same problem.Even when I checked the valve lash the exuast side had no play at all when the intake had .09 of lash which is normal.I do have another question after you put your lifters in and drive around and let them pump up and get adjusted, if you take them back out should you be able to compress them any at all by just pushing down on it yourself with a pushrod,or are they suppose to be unmovable unless you use a lifter compressor.I just thought of somthing about a year ago I changed the head gasket on my truck and I dont belive that it had a bent pushrod then so it would have happend after I changed the head gasket is it possible that I needed a shim in there or somthing.I bought the head gasket for a 360 later I found out that I had a 390 but the head gasket would be the same right.

The head gaskets are the same. I think you can pushdown the lifter with a tool, but it's supposed to move slow and take about 1 min. I'd look at the valves and rocker arms, it's not right for 1 to be off, you should be able to remove the rocker arms and place a straight edge on the tip of the valves and they should all be even. look also for bent rocker arm shafts and maybe something getting in the way of the stands properly seating.

One way to test it to run the engine without the valve covers and look for oil leakage around each rocker. The oil should be seaping out the tip of each rocker and non out the sides of the rockers. It could also be that the other rocker arms are worn, I've seen several sets that were badly worn and this would effect the clearance. Someone might have reconditioned the arms with a grinder on the tips.
