Computer controls on a diesel

Are there any computer controls or black boxes on a diesel? If so when did they start? Assume manual transmission and 2wd please.

It depends on what diesel you're talking about. Then I'd suggest starting in the forum specifically for that particular motor. Also, what do you mean by black box?

I'm looking into 86-93 F250/350 diesels.

Black box would be anything resembling a computer even if not actually a computer. Wiring, relays, transformers are easy enough to diagnose and repair or replace. Computer issues I've run into are not. I hate getting nowhere on a miss or stumble then going to the dealer who charges $70-120 to tell you "it's something with the pollution control or computer. We don't know exactly what but we'll replace it all for $1200." My reply is "Well duh!" and "No." I can replace it all for $400.

From what I've found:
74 first extended cab
77 last round headlights(std)
83 first diesel 6.9L
87 antilock standard, more aero style
88 7.3L diesel, 5 speed manual
92 much more aero, Turbo offered(small power increase)
94.5 electronics(powerstroke)

Any arguments?

up till 93 the engines were not computer controlled. BUT.... the automatic overdrive transmissions WERE computer controlled.

The Powerstroke diesels, which started in 1994 was computer controled. Before that there was no computer, but there was some complicated circutry and relays for the glow plug system.

That's what I figured. Fortunately, as I mentioned, I'm interested in a 5spd manual.

Ok.
