Ford Diesel without electronics

Did Ford ever make a diesel that was not computer controled?

If so what years were they?

Thank you in advance.

Wouldn't that be the IDI's, 6.9 and 7.3 ? early '80's to 1994 ?

Here is the pre-powerstroke forum on this site that covers the 6.9 and the pre-powerstroke 7.3's engines.

Ford also had the 6.6 & 7.8 in the F600-800. If you really wanted an unusual swap into a pickup, try a 6.6

I have a little experience with the 7.8. It would run circles around the 8.3 cummins in mileage and power. The 7.8 was made in Brazil if I'm not mistaken. It was pulled due to emissions standards in the mid 90's.

It would require MAJOR modifications to accomplish putting a 7.8 under the hood of an F-350. Heavier axle, bigger tires, and a big bump in the hood, not to mention stretching the front end to accomodate the added length of the longer engine. No, not a practicle modification.

Good luck on the 6.9, but I would look at a 5 speed over an automatic.

i have driven a 6.9 with a 5 speed (for a job i had) and liked well loved it but i want my truck to be something i can just jump in and drive and not have to shift and use a parking brake seeing as how i have had the truck for 4 years and it has never had a working parking brake. my DD is a 5 speed focus

oh i by the way this engine is going in my 70 F350....

'cool swap idea. There is a guy on the pre-powerstroke IDI forum who has a similar truck as to what you are building. I forget his name but if you watch the posts there is a picture of it. He could help you along.

My f-250 has 6.9 and C6 ... I like it ... Being IDI and NA it lends itself to many mods that do not require redoing electronics or programing ...

If you wanted to get fancy you could swap in a sleeved 7.3 IDI you wouldn't ever have problems with cavitation then build the engine from there.

You could aways swap in a Ford Lehman 6 cylinder they are a 363cid engine that makes a 5.9 Cummins look like a tinker toy. You would smoke out all your neighbours but the turboed 363 Lehman puts out 250hp and 500 ftlbs.

Here is another option a 6v53 wouldn't that sound good

I have a spare 6.6 liter turbodiesel engine. It would be sweet to put in a pickup. Its quite large though.... and for sale.....

Now we're talking! It's big, but not too big for an F250 or above. The extra touch of class would be the Ford script on the valve cover, unless that's only on the 7.8s...I cant remember off hand.
