I have just recently picked up a 1986 F250HD 4X4 with a 6.9L and C6. After replacing a battery and engine temp switch to engage the cold advance solenoid and timing, she is still a might hard to start. My question is, What are the vacuum lines running the driver's side of the IP? I see two vacuum lines and what looks an adjustment on the IP housing. Any takers?
VRV
vaccum regulator valve. It's for the c6 tranny.
the adjustment is to make it shift differently, if the trans shifts fine right now, leave it alone....
On the older years the GP controller was a pain and could stay on and burn out the GPs. I would check them with a test light. If they are not working ie test light will not light................read Zigsters info ........ http://www.members.shaw.ca/k2pilot/
No, it shifts differently than it should. When taking off from a corner under moderate pedal, it'll tach way up and not want to shift. I have to back off on the pedal for it to shift into second gear. Under light pedal it seems to shift more readily. I even had a spell yesterday where tried to goose it out of a corner and the trans didn't engage. I didn't watch the speedo last time I drove, but I will check that out this weekend to see where it likes/dislikes to shift. Thanks for the info.
I have done continuity/test light testing with the glow plugs and they all check out. The glow plugs come on for 10-12 secs when cold and the after glow cycles 2-3 times after starting. So far no problems, but after hearing the horror stories I will definitely keep an eye on that. Thanks.
Ben, I have the same truck with the same problem. I replaced the vacuum pump, the vacuum diaphragm valve on the tranny, and the vacuum lines and it still shifts hard. I think the only thing left is to adjust it at the IP and see if that fixes it.
the position of the throttle pedal controls the vacuum swithch on the injection pump. If you are romping on the throttle, you will close the vacuum switch and it wont allow the trans to shift. There is also a vacuum modulator on the right side of the c-6 that also controls the shifting points. Some of them are adjustable and some arent. Also, if you are romping on the throttle from the start , you are probably activating the kick down lever, which runs from the injection pump to the drivers side of the trans. When installing the vacuum switch on the injection pump, make sure the metal tab on the pump is installed properly with the switch or you will get improper vacuum adjustment. Hope this helps.
