Hi, I have had this howling noise coming from the engine compartment of my 2000 v10 Excursion since I bought it. I thought it was the y pipe so I changed it with a ford replacement. Still had the same noise. It sounds like its howling when on the gas heavy when its cold. Once it warms up the howling goes away a bit but is still present under heavy throttle. I have ruled out the heatshield and the plate between the motor and tranny. Any ideas what this could be, It almost sounds like intake whoooooosshhhh but with a higher pitch. Any help would be great.
Not sure what you mean by "howling", but mine screams like crazy when its started below zero, for a second or two, with a diminishing scream. My Dodge minivans do it too at those temperatures, just not as loud!
Not the same vehicle, but my '02 Explorer has always exhibited this "howling" sound when it was cold and I was laying into the gas pedal. It usually only does it once or twice when first taking off, and that's it. Doesn't do it every time either.
Krewat: the jet engine mataphor fits nicely.
Michael
P.S. 111,500 miles on the Explorer and still going strong.
P.P.S. Should be able to order my '06 F350 V10 this week from Jeff...
When I start in the A.M. the fan pulls a lot of air (howels) until the fan clutch comes up to temp. Once it does, the fan free wheels until it's needed, usually in hot weather in traffic.
I asked a similar question about this a few months back... Based on responses I did a little more digging. It did turn out to be the power steering pump. I haven't flushed and changed to transmission fluid yet, but eventually will.
My bet is the power steering pump... WOW is it loud.
Yes, I agree with the PS pump...My 2005 F350 V10 did it. Changing the fluid fixed mine. There was a TSB on the earlier trucks and this problem. I believe it was a bad hose/blockage, due to a dislodged screen/filter...Might want to look that up??
