My '99 Explorer has a problem. Every so often there will be a howling noise that gradually keeps getting louder. It sounds like it is coming from the front of the vehicle. Twice it has been sitting at a stop light and it will make a "pop" noise and then it will die. Both times it started right back up.
Other times it has done it I have found that if I rev the engine up when the howling starts, it will go away.
It happens at least twice a day, sometimes more.
I replaced the MAF sensor, thinking it was bad, but it still does it.
It sounds like the dreaded IAC howl. Try cleaning your IAC and see if it helps. I haven't had the problem with my 5.0 in my '97 Mountaineer but I did on my '97 Cougar 4.6
I have the 4.0 OHV engine. Is it easy to get to?
Also, about how much will a new IAC cost?
It is the small cylindrical attachment on the driver side of the Main throttle body, mounted by 2 10mm bolts and a wire connector... may have to remove small plastic cover to see it...
Remove and use brake clean to refresh the interior of the valve, do not spray cleaner into the coil (electrical) section.
