Hello everyone, new here to the forum. I have a 00 model that has a dead miss. I have replaced all 10 coils, new NGK plugs. The odd part of the deal is once the misfire codes are cleared the truck runs PERFECT for about 10 miles then goes starts missing again. Could this be a crank/cam sensor or computer. Any HELP would be appreciated.
Ouch..... 10 coils must have been expensive.... It's usually recommended to buy one and "walk" it around until the problem goes away - which evidently wouldn't have helped here.
You say you're getting codes and that periodically you clear them. Do the codes indicate random cylinders to be misfiring, or just one?
The codes are P0304, P0308 and P1780. The light never comes on to let you know that anything is wrong. We are checking fuel pressure and cleaning the MAF tommorrow. The local Ford dealer tells me for a $90 diagnostic fee they will tell me what the problem is. Oh, I replaced the cam postion sensor today with no effect. I am inclined to take it to Ford.
Get the misfire counters read and see what cylinder it is.
Could be a fuel injector partially clogged? When cold, the computer richens the mix, so the injector barely "injects". Then, as it leans it out, the injector almost complete stops?
When it starts missing after the 10 minute period, does it come on gradual, or like someone turned off a switch?

Codes P0304 and P0308 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Faulty spark plug or wire
Faulty coil (pack)
Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
Faulty fuel injector
Burned exhaust valve
Faulty catalytic converter(s)
Running out of fuel
Poor compression
Defective computer
Code P1780:
P1780 Transmission Control Switch circuit is out of Self-Test Range
Most on FTE V10 forum only recommend the MC spark plugs for these very problems with "other" brands. If you do a search...you will see it over and over that a spark plug change might be in order.
Also, I would remove the #4 COP and replace with #1 COP. Also remove the #8 COP and replace with #6 COP. See if the error codes change to the new location cylinder. If yes, then the COPs are bad. If not, then maybe it is the spark plugs in #4 and #8. Of course checking the fuel pressure is also a good idea...as others have suggested.
The local ford dealer has diagnosed the problem as a "Paranoid Schitzafrenic computer"-- Sorry about the spelling. Yep, the PCM is bad. They priced me a new one for $311. Is this a good price? He assures me that the PCM is the problem. The compression on the engine tested "great". The coil packs all tested fine. He seemed to think that NGK plugs would perform great in the truck. He did not recommend the Bosch however. Will keep you posted if this fixes the truck or not.
Well, I got the truck back today. $600+ dollars later. It runs perfect. When I picked it up I have never in my life received such poor treatment at a dealership. No one would take the time to speak to me about the repairs. The cashier took an attitude and rolled her eyes when I started asking questions. Oh well, I guess working the the business at an import store for 11 years has jaded me on how customers should be treated. I won't go back to my local dealer. My next visit will be one of the dealers in Knoxville.
Cool that the guys in "back" got her runnin' good again for ya. One thing you can do about the poor treatment from up front is to call the service manager and then let him know you're also giving the general manager an ear full about how you were treated. The dealership I turned wrenches at for 9 years really took these calls and the survey cards very seriously. We were a Benz, Audi, and Porsche shop with no competing stores for many miles but our owner and managers still tried to make the customers as happy as possible. Or, you can say **** on 'em, and never give them any more of your business!!

Glad to hear your V10 is happy again. That is to bad about the dealer, but I know what you mean...and how you felt. Happened to me when I took my 2003 SD V10 in for the 90,000 mile service. Got the bill and after the shock started to wear off...I then asked and GOT the bill reduced. Charging me for things that I did not request. Never going back to that dealer.
Why the $600+ dollars? I thought the PCM was only $300+? What else did they stick you with? Just curious...
