My work van (E250) has cracked rotors on the front how safe is this?? I think it should be parked til repaired but boss dose not seem to be to concerened about fixing.
Tell him to drive it. Next step for cracked rotors is for them to start coming apart and when that happens it isn't pretty. There is a reason why rotors can only be ground to a certain thickness and that is to prevent them from cracking. Also, you can tell him that cracked rotors being replaced now is a lot cheaper than having to replace them and anything else that gets destroyed when the rotor(s) come apart.
That is not only a moving violation in most states, it will also pull the insurance on the vehicle and if you would ever happen to hit somebody it would come back to really bite you in the you-know-where. We just learned about this in my brakes class at school, we went over all the legalities we have to deal with in the working world. There are many many stories of people coming back and getting shops for all they are worth for crappy brake work. Park it and tell the boss that until it is fixed you want a different van, he says no, ask the local police or highway patrol to swing by and have them fill him in on the possible consequences.
Something like that the Department of Transportation AKA "DOT" may get involved if there is a severe car accident caused by the faulty brakes on that van. A company van could not help the out come either.
The driver is responsible, not the "boss" , if you are driving the Interstates in NC, be carefull. Best bet is to get it repaired, is it due for inspection? That might get the boss to get it fixed. Like jtmerritt says, it isn't pretty when rotors come appart.
