What is the pattern for rotating tires? I heard that tires get a memory for direction. ie a tire on the left should not go on the right, rather a tire on the left should only move from front to back or vice versa.
The way I understood it, with the early steel belted radials, the belts would shift based on the direction the tire rotated over time. That is where the front to back and back to front rotation pattern came into play. The tires would always rotate in the same direction. The old bias tires of the past were not directional so they had the X pattern. With the advances in tires, most radials no longer have any problems or become directional with time so they can go back to the better X pattern. If you have white lettering on your tires, they are not likely to be directional tread. Too hard to manufacture all the left tires and the right tires....black wall off road tires (without any white lettering facing in) could be directional. Most directional tires have arrows indicating they the direction they should rotate alot of the time they look like little triangles. Some examples of directional tires, Goodyear Aquatread, Goodyear Supercar tires, Procomp X-terrains.
A Four tire rotation (according to my 2003 SD manual on page 250):
The rear tires move up to the front and stay on the same side.
The front tires get moved to the rear and move to the opposite side (the old X pattern).

That IS the proper way for 4 tires. The thinking behind it is that after 4 rotations, every tire has hit all 4 corners of the vehicle.
If you have read the latest articles on rubber life they are saying that tires have a shelf and/or useful life of approximately 5 years and then they should be replaced because of ozone deterioation and cracking. If you have a full size spare you should therefore do a five tire rotation and replace all five tires when worn out. You will also get 25% more miles before tires need replacing doing this. If you go to google and type in tire rotation, it will give you the 4 and 5 tire rotation recommendations.
I just did a 5 tire rotation on my PSD in a circle. i.e RR went to spare, spare went to LR. As long as you are consistent on the 4, 5 or dually rotations, you should be OK.

BTW, according to the manual if you have a DRW then it is a side to side swap. Left front to right front and vis-a-versa left rears (as a pair) to right. Also with a DRW it does matter because only 1 side of the outer wheels are polished. The insides are not.
you also probably wouldn't want to rotate on the spare tire unless you have the XL steel wheels or have sprung for a matching alloy wheel for the spare
