Went to start my 84 6.9 this morning about 0 degrees with the wind chill and wasnt plugged in cause the cord shorted out by the looks of it the other day.Turned the key let the glow blugs do there work light went off then i cranked it over but while cranking the glow plug light went on again and i heard a wierd sound. then tried again and it went from cranking over to nothing just stopped and it gives out one click.
Did the starter burn up?
I have noticed a smell coming from it in the past times while doing work on it like return lines and whut not but still did not crank it for more than 10 sec. saw that black wire on the starter was hot and smoking but that was like 2 weeks ago . Guess she dosnt like the cold.
if it clicks every time I would check the starter seloniod on the passanger side fenderwel. I dont recomend this but you could use a screwdriver to touch both terimnals and if your starter turns you know it is the selinoid, which is a common problem. it only costs about 12 dollars.
My truck did the same thing a few months ago same symptoms.I Got a starter from NAPA and WOW it was great $150.00-$160.00. Spins it over real fast, make sure you have a good set of batteries too. Check your solenoids first though.
