I just bought a 94 f150 2wd with 163k on the 300 six. When i got it home i started it up and noticed it was leaking a good amount of coolant from the back of the motor. After looking around i found the block was cracked about six inches on ether side of the drain plug on the right side of the block. I was wondering if any of ya would know what a good fix would be. Would jb weld would work. Thanks for your help.
i'd say they probably managed to sell it by putting some kind of filler in it just to make the leak stop, don't be surprised if it only gets worse. i'd call the person who sold it to you and call them on it, if not, sounds like a good excuse to get a new engine...
I bought the truck from a private person for $750 knowing it may need an oil pump. After I towed it to the house I changed the oil and filter, topped off the coolant. Then started it to see if I had oil pressure that is when I noticed all the coolant I just added leaked out of of the crack in the block. I was hoping that I would be able to plug the leak and replace the oil pump so I could have the truck for the occasional run to the home improvement store.
you can try plugging it, but every time you start the truck and it heats up and the metal expands, you're going to lose the patch and all your coolant with it. check the local salvage yard, you may be able to talk them into pulling a 300 from another truck, and doing the swap in the afternoon yourself. the engines were so plentiful some is bound to have rolled or t-boned one recently, and most places won't charge much since not many people ask to have them pulled. its not worth risking losing the engine in a dangerous place or getting stranded to save a few bucks.
