My 01 ranger is a good truck.However...it eats gas like i do pizza...and is the most gutless 4.0 ive ever driven.Anyone have an sugestions or coments ?
most people that have just bought their first ranger feel the same way with the 4.0 and 3.0. after awhile we just get used to it. so far it sounds like an intake with an exhaust system is a good start in getting more power and mpg. then theres a chip, gearing, shift-kit, injectors, etc., etc.
This is my second 4.0 ranger. The first was a 93.What agreat truck !! Never missed a beat and had pleanty of power.About my 2001, No i dont get any " ck engine" lights and yes, I did install 265 tires instead of the 245s, However....my complaints about power an milage stem from before that. I installed a K/N air filter , removed the air intake snorkle and added six 1 inch holes in the air box. Also....I removed the guts from the rear section of the cat.Milage didnt change much , if at all. Neither did power.I currently get between 14 and 17mpg.Durring the summer it goes up to 17-19mpg.My buddy get 18-20 with his 98 4.0 and it walks ALL OVER me.
OK,,, just for kicks, lets try a compresion test. Try checking for a leaking throttle body gasket, and while your at it , check all vacuum hoses and connections. (You know, that when engines are built , they're given a rating, like A, B, C,.......,like a quality check, and some engines are born just quite not up to snuff, but are good enough to make the grade.)MIght also want to check(or replace) those O2 sensors, as they play a big part in the air/fuel mixture, as does the IAT sensor, and the temperature sensor.
I know you've probably looked into this, but anyway the difference could be as simple as the rear gearing. If your truck ended up with 3.08's and your buddies truck and your old one had 3.73's or 4.10's, that would make a huge difference.
4.0L SOHC, right? With 207 hp @ 5250 rpm and 238 ft-lbs @ 3000 rpm. This shouldn't be gutless! That's almost 50 hp more than your old '93, but the '93's peaks were at a lower RPM.
Gutless is a 3400lb Ranger that Ford saw fit to put a 100hp Pinto Engine in, like mine. YAY O-60..... well I'm still waiting after almost five years. Plus, it's so unaerodynamic that it slows down going down steep grades that even my '82 LTD (can you say BOX?) will fly on. But I gotta love the 29-30mpg it gets, even if it's sooo slow it can get out of it's own way.
