I just got a 88 2.9 4x4 its gutless it has 3.73 gears are these naturally weak or is there something wrong with mine

 

Nop, sorry to say its goin to be gutless, Because its extra cab, 4x4 and only has a 2.9 to push it around, But you can put on a better muffler and spectre intake to help it scoot alittle better, Oh and id sea foam it, i did that to my 4.0 and my pops 4.9 and it really helpd, That and run 2 bottles of fuel system cleaner, and get the better stuff youll see better results and check you air filter and what not.... So give those ideas a try and lit us know

another way to get a little more top end power out of the 2.9L is to swap the throttle body off of an older 86-87 2.9L..the 86-87 throttle body is alot bigger.. i did this to mine and it gave it a little more get up and go..

 

"Zip tie mod" did wonders on mine.
