do you mean just run headers, with no other exhaust components, and let the exhaust end just behind the firewall, or do you mean no other upgrades, just the headers and no intake or anything else, but still run the exhaust?
it shouldn't cause any major concerns, after all, if you look at all the top fuel dragsters, they all run uncorked headers. you will have a LOT of noise, which will eventually get you stopped. you'll also run the risk of losing some of the scavaging ability of the headers. that isn't a big deal for the super high revving drag cars, but it will affect your truck to some degree.
W/ standard built Street engines that are not rebuilt after each time they are run, sucking cooler to cold air straight back into the super heated combustion chambers does not do wonders for the engine.
There is not direct problem, but as Col mentioned they do suck air back into themselves between exhaust pulses and that can damage exhaust valves. It also creates a bit of a fire hazzard because there will be fire shooting out the ends of them. That can be disastrous if you have an oil, trans fluid, or fuel leak.
LoL! I love this question! When I bolted my Clifford headers on, I had to drive the truck to the exhaust shop to have the guy bend some pipe to fit. It was a howlin good time driving with open headers! Man, I romped the stew out of it, too. It was fun for a couple miles, but every time I let off the gas, it popped and sputtered. I had tuned the new carb as best I could with just the headers on (so I could drive to the exhaust shop), and even at idle, I had flames blowin out of the collectors.
I wouldn't recommend running open headers unless you know how to set up the motor appropriately. But, you're right, it sounds awesome!
Don't forget to buy LOTS of stock in a HEARING AID COMPANY!!
With my cab corners in the shape they are in I would die of Carbon Monoxide long before I lost my hearing . I wouldn't run open headers anyway because of the whole might light my truck on fire thing. After I lost my 1975 E-150 to a fire I don't take any chances. But I think the sound of open headers is the closest you will ever get your 300 I-6 to sounding like a V-8
The old truck sounds so good with open headers, it is temting, but I'm going to play it safe, I'm going to hook up my old exhaust right after I figure out how to make the $#@&^ throttle and transmission kickdown lever bracket. I think I know what I'm going to do but I am not sure if I can get it to work. If anyone had any ideas on how to hook up my transmission kickdown lever that would be great

what do you mean you want your six to sound like a V8... I thought we worked on sixes cause we knew all along they were better engines, not 'cause we wanted them to sound like some 8 cylinder...
I just put mine on a couple days ago and although I plan on hooking up my old exhaust I must say it sounds soooo good (and loud) with open headers
Yes it does, especially at idle with a cam lope. Sounds like a tractor/v8 mix on steriods during acceleration, hard to explain. I drove around for about 2 days with open headers.
Right now I have hookers, with true 2.25" duals. Got some cheap turbo mufflers cause I didnt want it so loud. At below 1,000 it sounds V8 all the way, after that its got somewhat of a rumble, still quiet though. Worse part is the starter. Its stuffed in there with the headers, had to fab a heat sheild. Whats bad is when it gets hot, it doesnt wanna start. Cranks over in slow motion. I recomended getting header wrap, but the guy at the machine shop said they'll fry the headers, since they retain heat.

I am very offended (just kidding), I never said I wanted mine to sound like a V8, I simply said it does sound sort of like a V8 for the people who are interested. There's only one good gas engine for me.....need I say anything else.
