I noticed as I was driving down the interstate that was enigine seemed to feel like the load was changing. It kind of feels like the AC compressor is turning off and on in the summer. But I know I wasn't that because I turned off the heat and it didn't make the sound of the compresser turning on. All I feel is a change in the load on the engine. I noticed it happens at 60 mph and I noticed it at 45 mph but not at 70 mph. It could be happeing at other speeds but I was not on enough long flat roads to make sure.
First guess would be the torque converter is locking/unlocking. Next question, why? My guess would be an erratic signal to EEC from either a speed sensor, worn throttle position control sensor or some wiring problem, i.e. poor ground, short, etc. That's a pretty broad range of possibilities, perhaps some of the sharper minds around here can help narrow this down.
You might want to try pulling the code, even if the Check Engine light does not go on. My guess would be either the fuel pressure regulator is acting up or you have a partially plugged fuel filter. Fuel filter problem ususally only shows up when you are at high speed or under heavy loads.
Read codes, and replace fuel filter ($7) if it has not been done in the past couple years. While at the auto parts store, pick up a bottle of Chevron techron, B-12 or Seafoam and dump it into the gastank.
I had the codes read and they told me 111 and 122. I am not at home so I don't now what 111 is, but the guy at the autoparts store told me 122 was the throttle position sensor. I did notice the cover that sits over the throttle position sensor was rubbing against the throttle. So now I have two questions.....
1. Can the rubbing cause the initial symptom?
2. Can I drive about 800 miles wthout the cover?
EBTDM...It happens when everything is turned off.
I might be driving on some flat roads tonight to see if it is still doing it. I will post more once I know something. BTW the check engine light was NOT on.
Thanks everybody for the quck replys! I am visiting my mother this week since she had Kemotherapy Monday and I have an 800 mile trip back home to Norfolk Virginia on Saturday. I don't want to get stranded on the trip home.
Yup, I've been there, faulty TPS can cause the exact symptoms you are experienceing. The resistances of the TPS are out of spec range, and causes the computer to intermittenly think you are operateing at wide open throttle. Since you are not, the fule mixtures will be temporarily rich, and the timing will advance too far, to the point that the engine doesn't perform properly. Also, the TC may lock and unlock.
