I was driving my 93 XLT on the road yesterday in the snow. I was having problems stopping while I was in 4wheel drive. When I would apply the brakes the vehicle shake and I had to hit them hard. The vehicle would not come to a complete stop. I think this has something to do with the weight of the vehicle and my tires ( I have road tires). I am thinking of going with more heavy duty tires and switching to heavy duty front rotors and brake pads that I saw at Bronco Graveyard. Any thoughts?
I dont think that the heavy dutyness of the pads/rotors will cause a shake while stopping while the 4X4 is engaged.
If your getting a shake when in 4X4 while stopping I think it has more to do with warped rotors...or?
You said you were driving in the snow......do you have ABS in your 93 or just RABS. The shaking you were feeling could have been your ABS system in action??? Did you feel the shake more in the steering wheel, or in the seat of your pants?
It seemed like I felt it more so in the steering wheel. I thought of the ABS. I am not sure if it is ABS or RABS.I am thinking the shaking might have been because there is no ABS... Does the 93 come with either ABS od RABS? I am not sure if I have it or not. I've only had the truck for a week.... (NEWBIE)
93 was the first year for 4-wheel ABS and the fronts tend to lock up quickly especially in 4WD on snow. My bet would be the ABS system was trying to compensate. My 93 did the same thing to me and that was the end of the ABS. When I hit the pedal it had better freakin' STOP. No computer is gonna decide that it knows how to stop my truck better than I do!
I hear you greystreak. It made me sweat a couple of times when I hit the brakes. Are you saying you disconnected the ABS? Can that be done? If so, is it effective?...
In the under-hood power distribution box there is a relay that routes power to the ABS system. (Your owners manual or a service manual should indicate which one). Pull it out and never look back. Without power to the system, the ABS will not function and the braking system will perform just like a conventional braking system. No worries, no pulsing, no wondering if it will actually bring you to a stop in time.
