hey all. i havent posted in a bit as my pc crashed and i couldnt remember the url but anyway im back.
the other night i was driving home about 20 minutes on the road and all of a sudden the truck jerked (like hitting the breaks hard or a down shift) and a "thud" noise came out from under neath.my friend was with me and we both thought i hit a small animal but after checking i didnt think i did. well i dropped off my friend and started home. it happend again but not as bad. this time no noise but the same feeling.
i took it to the shop (brother in law owns his own) and he looked it over from front to rear and found that the meergency cable was hung up and the rear breaks have cracks in the shoes but werent broken. he said its the only thing he could find. to me it felt like the feeling and noise came from the front.
the truck is a 96 xlt with 5.8 and ed04 tranny. anythoughts i would be greatfull to hear.i was/am afraid somthing in the tranny is bad.
Had a similar event with my 92. But you'd know by now if the problem was the same as mine had been. She bled tranny fluid for two hours after I limped her to the nearest service station. Leaked from the inspection plug in the bottom of the tranny bellhousing. Hydraulic pump had blown its guts into the torque converter or was it the other way around... doesn't much matter I suppose. The sound was as you describe though... felt and sounded like hitting a tree stump when you are out four-wheeling.
But if its still driving, then thats not the problem. Check for damaged hubs if it felt like something up front. With manuals it could have been one stuck between locked and free. With autos... well with autos, who cares, if one died its a good excuse to swap to manuals.
