i have 2 trucks a 72 shortbed with a 390, and a 73 longbed with a 460 conversion 4x4. the main problem is my 73 never fully charges the battery. every once and a while i have to charge it again. i have a new optima battery and tried 3 altenators. maybe the wires are mixed up on the altenator. i have a mallory distributor and ignition system. i have changed the led eye that replaces the points and the mallory coil. it seem to charge at like 12 volts. also i tried taking the voltage regulator out of my 72 to see if would charge stronger but no luck. any ideas?
also i am looking for the front drive shaft to this truck it has the divorced transfer case i believe because its in the middle of the truck. it has a manual tranny. i do not have much money.some guy said he would sell me his drive shaft for 85 that is 31". not sure if it will work.
this is a gorgeus 73 with no rust resuced from california i paid a lot for the truck when i had money. i look forward to repainting and showing it off.
thank you sincerely, mike murray

Welcome to FTE, sounds like a good pickup... First, use a voltmeter and check battery voltage with engine running. With a good alternator you will get a 13-15 volt reading. Look the alt, battery and regulator connections making sure they are clean and tight. The regulator grounds through the mounting bolts, so make sure there is a tight clean ground there too. Also measure the voltage a the large wire on the alternator with engine running. Let us know what you find, and we can go from there.
well i have a volt meter and it was only reading 12 at the battery. i will check at the altenator and clean evrything real good. it runs real smooth and will idle as long as you want it to drink gas. it ia show truck inm the making i just need to sole this little problem. i drive it now and just charge it every week or so. thanks for your help.
there are two version of voltage regulators, i am thinking of replacing it anyway. i think the higher priced one is electronic. is there a difference? i will be out in the cold working on this all day tomorrow ill post what the results were. ps. bought a nice new battery charger at walmart.
