This is my first posting. I am the owner of a 1999 Ford Explorer. Power Steering unit has always been LOUD, and now it has finally had its last steer. My lovely hubby is trying to replace it and has run into a little trouble. He can get the unit out, but now he is a little stuck trying to replace it. Any suggestions? Can someone guide us to a manual or give us a hint? Thanks!! By the way, my Ford has done me well. 238,000 miles and counting. This is the first major problem we have had.
If his trble is the pulley remove and install, he'll need a puller for removal but can use long bolt and nut with a socket the same diameter as the pulley hub to press pulley back on new pump.

Reason: didn't finish sentence
Here's a link for the removal and replacement. As Mrshorty said, you need a puller to get the pulley off. Some auto stores will let you borrow/rent one for a day or two.
I have posted once to this forum, thanks again to everyone who replied. I have been trying to do a new post and dead brain me have forgotten how to do a new post! Anyhow, if anyone reads this can someone guide me regarding a loose steering wheel? Yup, I have airbags. 99 Ford Explorer with over 262,000 miles and still going strong!! Guidance from anyone. Thanks
What do you mean by "loose"? Does it wobble side to side, up and down, in and out, or just sloppy/wandering steering while going down the road.
What to look at depends on the exact symptoms. Post them and we can go from there.
thanks for your reply: it feel like the steering wheel is going to come off. is the bolt coming loose,is there a berring in the collum. and the buzzer is ringing also. HELP PLEASE.
Yes, there is a bolt in the center of the shaft. Older modles had a tapered spline shaft and steering wheel was also splined (and possibly alignment keyed, I don.t recall exactly). Removing the wheel usually requires a puller tool.
In your case, disconnect the battery and wait 10-20 minutes. (AIRBAG SAFETY ITEM)
Search around on the back side of wheel for screws holing the center section (airbag, switches, horn ect.) to the wheel, remove the screws, lift off the center, disconnect any wiring harnesses present, and set it FAR ASIDE from the work area. (AIRBAG SAFETY ITEM)
Bolt should be visible, so check for loosness and tighten if loose, replace center section components.
If not loose, try to push/pull/rock side to side the wheel & shaft and see if the shaft slops around. If so, further tear down will be required.
Post your results of these cheks and we can go farther if needed.

Thanks for the quick reply and I will post findings as we get to them. One other question: Is there a switch or once you discconnect the battery will there be an source of energy for the air bag to deploy? This is my only concern. I don't that air bag to deploy. They are too expensive to replace.
Airbag control module has a built in power system that stores power and will allow it to deploy for a short time AFTER power is removed, such as in a crash situation. But it will bleed off over time. That is why the instruction to disconnect the battery and wait 20-30 minutes before working on it to be assured it has bled off.
Storing the unit away from the work area, with any wires facing up helps assure that a random static electricity discharge will not cause the unit to deploy, and if it accidentally does, minimize any collateral danger to someone nearby as it may go flying around in the air.

Thanks for all your replies. However, this air bag thing is kinda scary. You did give great instructions--I've decided to take it to a mechanic and let him "mess" up. At least it will be covered!!
