My steering got real "heavy" almost as if I had no power steering so I replaced the power steering pump. The steering got a little easier but is still very stiff. It's extremely hard to turn at low speed just off idle...I have to rev the engine a bit to get it to turn. This is on my 1999 7.3 f350...I've ran 33" and 35" tires on it it's whole life and this is the first PS pump I've replaced since 1999...never replaced the steering box.
I think the best bet would be not to throw parts at it.
FFind someone that has access to a power steering
analyzer and get it diagnosed.New and reman pumps
have come out being bad right out of the box. You
need to know that pressure and flow are correct.

Or you can spend a lot of money with guessing.
Sean
Every shop around me wants $90 for diagnostic. A new box looks to be $280 - $400, I guess I was thinking that if someone could confirm my symptoms as related to the steering box and given the fact that I've never replaced it I could just put that $90 toward the new unit.
But if it turns out to not be the steering box...
What you do is see how much that one doing
the testing will charge to put it in and if they
will waive the testing costs if you let them
do the install.
One other option is buy the tool on Ebay then after you
done resell it

Do to my training I just won't guess and replace a part.
I agree with Sean. While it's possible you have a bad spool valve in your steering gear, the fact that it got easier with your new pump has me thinking otherwise. But if you do end up replacing the gear, check out www.rockauto.com. They sell them as cheap as $89 plus shipping.

I know Redhead has had their issues as well but here is the result of my Rock auto box I got this summer..
Thanks for the advice guys...I'm still weighing my options...It seems like there is lots of trouble with these re-manufactured steering boxes regardless of where they come from...huh?
Are most ordering Redheads or more the OE type from Rock Auto?
I'm currently running 35" BFG Radial T/A's
I'm guessing all places will require a core in return?
There are some steering tests that can be done without the POWER STEERING ANALYZER. But you need a few tools
and the instructions. I don't have the book for your year.
For mine it involves a spring scale and getting the wheels off
the ground and doing some testing under the specified conditions.
Your going to need to get access to the info in the Shop Workbook
for your year.
