Power steering
Hello all, I am new to the forum but owner of Fords since I was 15 years old.
My 17 year old son ran across a 1986 F700 with the 8.2 DD allison trans.
The truck is a retired Dallas area rapid transit tow truck minus the tow boom. It has been thru 3 or 4 previous owners before he bought it this last summer. Needless to say the truck has had personal flare added by all previous.
He was excited to get it for $800. Previous owner had warned us that his helper had accidently put power steering fluid in the brakes, but no worry he had a local mechanic flush the lines.
Now the problems arise.
We noticed the leaks on the drive getting bigger. So we checked it out yesterday.
The last owner has put DOT 3 brake fluid in the power steering resivoir and the seals have started to disenegrate. What little dot3 was left in the system we tried to drain. put in P/S fluid and walla it leaked out over night.
I have looked on line for seal kits for the steering gear box and steering pump. I found the pump seals but not the gear box seals.
I'm planning replacing the hoses as well.
Question is does anyone know where a seal kit for the steering box can be had? Or is this an item that has to be remanufacured?
Thanks for any input.
Noel.
Thanks for the reply.
We are in North Texas and there is a Napa in Denton. I will check there tomorow.
