For myself, I'm using the pump and gearbox from a '85 F-350 b/c I have an extra and it's pretty simple. Lots of guys like the Toyota gearbox or the Volare. The steering is so straightforward that just about any unit will work. Are you running the stock front suspension or are you looking to change that out too?
I am currently in the process of installing the toyota conversion in my 57. I purchased the mounting kit and the pitman arm from CPP. I bought the toyota box from a wrecking yard in CA, just because no one had a new one! The only problem I forsee at this time is getting the ball stud off the pitman arm and having it taper drilled. Machine shops around here do not seem to be adequately equipped to do this. I may have to cut off the lower end of my original pitman arm and fab it into the new arm. I was told that No Limit sold a pitman arm without the stud, but they said they didn't have such a creature. I am trying to get this thing back together this weekend, so I will hopefully have some better info for you tomorrow or Monday. I'll try to take some pics as well.
These others are fine & dandy but, if you wish to stay Original Style, the Ram Assisst P/S System will Bolt right into place, so contact John F-Funhundred in Anaheim.
It's really the Best way to go, as you do not have to Cut, Hack, nor Weld a bleedin' thing, just bolt it right up.
Thinking of putting that ram assisst unit on my 57, but dont have $1200.00 available right now. How does that set up work ? What pumps the fluid, and how does it pump ?
If you go to John's F-Funhundred I'm quite sure he would be able to get it for you @ a better price than that.
Standard late '50s FoMoCo P/S Pump, Brackets & Pullies if you are powered by an 8 or you need to find the harder to locate I-6 Brackets & Pullies, but still use the same P/S Pump.
The price I mentioned was from Johns Fun-onehundred on-line catalog (1200.00) and that didnt include the pump or brackets. I will go back and check again, could have been a misprint I suppose. Thanks , one of your comments was what started me looking at this Ram Assist sys. I am trying to keep my 57 as orginal as possible, but I sure would like PS. Just rebuilt my steering unit, but its still tiring to drive in this city traffic, I use my truck daily. Thanks , later. Roy
Actually, that's his Old price & it also states that he no longer carries them.
BUT, if you call & talk to John personally & tell him I sent you, I'm quite certain you'll work out something better.
Yeh, I noticed that the printed catalog indicated DISC, however, the on-line catalog had the price. Either way its a lot, I'm considering other options. Thanks Roy.
The On-Line catalog also has Discontinued in there as well for the '57-'60 truck & he's worked w/ others I've sent to him because he's the best to deal w/ concerning parts for our years of trucks.
There are others that have the same Ram Assist System but aren't as easy to deal w/.
Good Luck.
