There is a plastic piece of trim that runs from below the rear wiper through the blue oval down to the lift handle for the glass window. Ours just devoloped a crack all the way down. It seems to be just the plastic piece. Anyone have this happen? Or know a web site with a parts breakout. I know the dealer will charge a arm and a leg.
Thanks
extreamly common on the 02-05 Explorers and Mountaineers. I have an 02 Mountaineer and had that brake on me too. Most every 02 owner has had it brake. Its cost roughly 300 bucks to put a new plastic part on and repaint it from the dealer, there is a TSB on this as well. This is one of Fords defects they have not owned up to yet and make a recall about this!
Yep, I had to replace the one on my '02. cost me 250 at the dealer, painted to match, etc, installed. Don't let a dealer try to tell you that you have to replace the whole glass, or the tailgate (that used to be the fix long ago)... I had an argument with another dealer here in town over it, changed dealerships, got it fixed. Another instance of poor engineering on these trucks... Good news is, I believe that they're using a different plastic in the new part that doesn't crack like the old one... temperature extremes seem to bring it on.. when mine cracked, the crack would totally close up in full sun, when it was colder, like around 35 degrees, you could stick your finger in it.. who comes up with this crap?
Mine was replaced along with the shattered rear window last Wednesday. Total bill came to $1500. Luckily since there was glass breakage insurance covered it. Sucky design from Ford, sucky service from Ford.

did you have Ford do the recall before the window broke on you?
Mine was cracked, too ('02 Explorer) and I showed the dealer when I was there for other service. He told me it was a design flaw and that they would replace it for free. Sure enough, they ordered the part, painted it and installed it free of charge. Maybe they just felt bad about charging me a gazillion dollars for the other repairs.
