I've searched...read...absorbed...and still need info from those more knowledgable. I have a '95 F150 4x2 5.0L 4R70W 3.31 . OK, the front TTB is no problem, any old 80-96 F150 or Bronco and match ratios by whatever manner. My question is on the t-case. What year trucks must I get the case from to match my 4R70W?? .... or should I just look for a complete trans/t-case? Can someone shed some light on this for me? Opinions?
I would personally take both front an rear axles out of the donor vehicle and make sure they are geared 3.55, 3.73 or 4.10. I'm not sure what size tires you are going to run but with 3.31 gears it would be a dog.
I would also look for a tranny/tcase already married and go that route. I would also probably have a competent tranny shop take a look at it, or yourself if you know auto trannys/tcases.
I'm not going BIG on the tires, 255/70's or maybe 30x9.50's. The tranny/t-case ready-to-swap is what I figured to be easiest. '97 went to 4.6/5.4 so I'm to look for '96 back to where for the 4R70W? When did they first put the 4R70W in the F150?
just a question... most people convert 2wd to 4x4 so they can off-road and run big tires. so your going to go through all that trouble to just stick with 30's?!!
I'm 50, retired and I don't like getting stuck in the field/pasture/snow ... ... I need a tow vehicle for the car trailer and it might as well be one that does everything well ...... and I now have plenty of shop time on my hands.
are you 100% sure its the 4r70? i thought those trucks mostly saw the E4OD autos and the mazda 5 speeds.
actually the axle swap will be easier, IMO. the t-case you gotta worry about different adapter lengths, different tailshaft lengths, different tailshaft spline count, etc. however i think ford pretty much made them all interchangeable. since you are going with a lite setup i would absolutely go with a BW1345 or BW1356. you'll get a pretty light case as well as one helluva low gear!
The truck is a '95 with a trans code "U". According to the decoder here that's a 4R70W. The pan says METRIC on the bottom........ YES???
What t-case would have been behind a 84 F150 4x4 302 w/3-speed OD?? I can buy the trans/t-case, bellhousing, flywheel, used clutch and both driveshafts for $250.

That should have a 208 in it- good enough for what you want to do with it but I wonder how your computer will react to the non computer tranny. You might consider a divorced mount 205 from a early to mid 70's Ford truck.
