I am looking to covert my 1995 f150 auto 4r70w to a 5 speed. I was in the junkyard and didn't see any manual transmissions that had the push button 4x4. If I do this swap can I still use my push button 4x4 transfer case with the 5 speed manual I put in it? Are the two compatible?
The push button 4x4 would be on the transfer case and not the transmission... A switch would be dash mounted. And yes, they should be compatible in theory because pushing a button on the dash activated a motor on the transfer case, instead of linkages like a manual transfer case would have.
As for if that combination has been used in this vintage truck, I could not tell you. You would want to look for a 4x4 transmission though that will mate up to that transfer case.
Ok. Thanks! I was curious as I couldn't find any of trucks in the junkyard that had the 4x4 with the pushbutton for the transfer case & a manual transmission. Are there any website that anyone knows of that would sell the wiring harness for the manual transmission that fits the f150's with the 4x4 push button transfer case?
Thanks!
esof was rarely used with manual trans.
esof is used with automatic trans because if the driver is not smart enough to know how to shift a transfer case, there is no way he will be able to shift a manual trans.
as far as using an esof transfer case on a manual trans, all transfer cases have the same bolt patterns so they will bolt to the manual trans

Hahaha... I f'in LOVE this... almost made me spill my beer! I threw that soccer-mom ESOF thing in the scrap heap awhile ago and went to manual 4x4... one of the best mods to this truck ever! When the auto trans goes kaboom, a manual will be found in it's place.
Hahahah love it! I would prefer the msof also. Truck happened to come with esof. Maybe I will just find a donor transfer case with msof when the time comes...
Question: If the hole is there in the floor for a manual transmission and you have an automatic, is there no plate cover/access for the msof transfer case shift handle also? thanks!
Yeah I measured my cab when I cut the hole and it lined up just fine. Great, thinks me! I'll just put this factory boot and bezel in place... uh... why ain't it fitting?
Oh. Because my floorboards are different than the donor truck. Donor had an access panel over the trans... mine does not.
So, I made my own outer boot, and just used the beauty boot without the bezel inside the cab.
no, auto trans cab has a solid floor, and manual trans has a bolt in floor pan over the trans.
plus the T-case shifter is a cut it yourself deal. the cabs do not have cutout/plates for the t-case.
In my estimation, Ford never offered the ESOF transfer case with a manual transmission an any F150 96' and older. In any event, yes you can do it as the transfer case bolt patterns are the same from auto to manual. The only thing you have to do to make the transfer case shift is to "trick" the shift module into thinking the transmission is always in neutral. This is how the auto/ESOF system works. You can shift into 4HI at any time but you must be in neutral or park to switch into 4LOW. Below are some notes I put together to get all the systems working like factory.
And this is the "jumper" I made to make the ESOF module think the truck is always in neutral. Its the red to black soldered wires. You will also notice the other factory "jumper" that is a red w/blue stripe wire. It is factory in a manual transmission wiring harness and is for the start interlock, which is handled by the clutch switch in a manual truck.
Also, F150 automatics have a solid floor. Bronco automatics have a bolt on plate like heavier duty (F250, F350) trucks with automatics. All floors however are stamped out with the cut patterns in them, both for the transmission cover and the transfer case lever cover. There is nothing special about cutting out the holes, just stay inside the lines. I had to cut my floor for the manual cover.
Wow Great Amount Of Information There. Thank You. Only difference would be mine being a 4r70w vs e4od. Tricking The computer should be the same with the jumper wires on my 4r70w, correct? Did you swap over the manual computer or did the jumpers you had in the harness keep the check engine light off? Also I take it that the jumpers you installed into the harness to tell the computer it was in neutral were so you could engage 4L?
Hey kawamatt2, I forgot to ask, what model manual did you swap in, m5od-r2? Ive read a couple articles that left me puzzled on the internal/external slave cylinder deal. Do I need to look for any particular transmission that will make the switchover easier when im ready for the swap? thanks !

When you see the PTO plate on the side of the transmission, it's a ZF, which uses an internal clutch pack
Okay, forgive me here, im about to ask a dumb question. What is the PTO plate? Last time I used the term was for a pto was a switch on a dump truck we were using. Should I look for a particular bulge on actual "plate" on the right/left side? Ive delt plenty with the tech specs on my auto trans but the manual trans specs will be new for me. Thanks for humoring me guys!
