how to ruin your day in one easy step.
stopped to look at a truck for work yesterday morning.
parked the 02 diesel towards the end of the yard, partially blocking the main road.
when i went to leave i heard a "SNAP" as i pulled it into reverse, and there it stayed until the flatbed showed up to haul it back to my shop to take it apart.
this is what i found:
4 hours and $200 out of my pocket later, the truck drove home.

Same thing happened to me a couple months back. I was fourutnate enough for it to break in drive so I could get it home. Pulled into the drive front first even with the trailer. Pulled all the way to the garage, looked odd but had it up and running after about 2 hrs including running to the parts store and such.
$200, did you go OEM? I went Napa and had about $50 in it.

when mine broke a few years ago i took a screwdriver and poped the clam shell cover off the column and shifted it with a pair of channel locks, i ran service calls like that all day.
the parts counter guy at the dealer said its common for them to break, and i think the same part is used across a few models so it was in stock. long forgot the price, but only took an hour to replace.
if you forget to push the brake pedal in before you shift out of park and go yankin on the handle ( don't lie we are all guilty of it!!!) that cast aluminum tube sees a fair amount of torque placed upon it

no spinach omelet, someone messed with it before i got the truck 8 years ago and used locktite on the torx screws, plus they stripped the head of one of the ones holding the shift detent on.

one use only is for people with more money than brains.
$150 to get it towed from where it was partially blocking an industrial park entrance to my shop, and $50 for the junk yard column to cannibalize for parts.

Gotcha. Well that makes sense then. I was lucky it broke in drive then and could pull right out.

i would have started the engine and set the park brake, and got under it and pop the shifter cable off the trans then put it in gear at the trans.
but the parking brake cable broke last month and i have not replaced it yet.
so i really was not looking forward to using my body as a wheel chock.................again.
