okay so i dont know my fords like other makes - sorry
I have an '85 F150 (4x4 shortbed) with a 4.9 liter straight six. The boss (my wife) has authorized an engine swap to get this baby back on the road. I am having massive trouble with the distributor/ECM and keeps stalling/backfire so I just want to go V-8 cause I am beginning to hate the six cyl.
Question for the real techies out there:
Does a 5.0 V-8 bolt to my transmission or am I fooked?
auto or manual? if its manual u might be able to swap the bellhousing if its bolted to the tranny. i wouldnt recommend an engine swap because its alot of work. i can tell u that most people will like the 300 inline six over the v8. they are very reliable long lasting engines. if i was you i would stick with it. please explain the problem as well
thanks - i've heard that the six is reliable I just have had a lot of trouble with this one and i know v-8's much better. I have the techical skilz to swap the motors, the only thing may be different motor mounts but that is no big deal.
It is a manual trans 4 speed (technicallly 3 with an OD).
I am trying one last attempt to replace the distributor. I ordered the one with the elec control module already on it so I dont mess up putting that thing on. I have replaced the gaskets for the valve cover and what appears to be a push-rod cover on the left side of the engine. Oil was leaking from both and was all over the distributor and other components.
If the dist does not do the trick I may be looking for a 302, I was only worried that it might not bolt to my trans, in which case it might be better to stick with a six.

A carb or fuel problem could create the same problems. have you check the carburator and checked the intake manifold and vacuum supplies for any leaks?
