I am looking at a 1991 Bronco that is for sale, it is the original Burgandy color and needs repainting. The Fiberglass top is faded and oxidized, is there a way to restore the top short of painting it?
Also, it a 25th aniversery model, does that add to it's value?
Welcome... I've got a 25th Anny, and most people never knew they made one. I think it adds to the value, but most wouldn't pay more for one. My top is also faded badly. I've tried numerous products, and there are some things that'll make it look good for a couple weeks, but it's not worth the effort. I wrecked mine, and it has a couple spots of rust (mainly on the tailgate and radiator support) so it's getting a new paint job soon.
Come join my group of Silver Ann'y owners if you buy it, or just want to look at some information. http://groups.msn.com/1991SilverAnniversaryBroncogroup
I used to have an SAE. I used some of that maroon colored wax on mine, put it on real thick, let it set for several hours in the shade, and then used diluted vinegar to get off the dried residue. It looked fantastic. It lasted for about 6 months, then started to fade again. I sold the truck after that so I never did it again.
The best way to get the fade out of the top is to take it off. haha
Actually I don't think its possible, I primed it and put a clear coat on mine when I painted my truck and I'd say it lasted for about a year. What more can you do than that?
Thanks for your replies.
I looked at the Bronco again a little closer and found the bottom edge of the tailgate is starting to rust. What is the best way to fix it?
a new tailgate lol. u wont see a bronco withoutrust on the tailgate there, unless its new or the owner is crafty. if u find a flat paint color thats close to the original fiberglass top, just prep the top real well ( cleaning and such) then paint it.
It actually depends on what part of the country you live in. We have a 1990 Bronco with no rust whatsoever on it. The tailgate is perfect, too - no rust.
They can be found, you just have to look a little harder for them.
When I painted mine about 4-5 years back, I cut out all the rust on the tailgate and took a 6" strip of aluminum sheet metal and attached it on there with some sort of glue or silicone, I can't remember. Anyway, alum. don't rust so mine is fine. I am no metal worker however so the bottom 6" of my tailgate is a tad bit wavy but it looks alot better than huge rust filled gashes.
I have a '91 SAE. The top is faded but I love the look as well against the darker body color. I don't have a lick of rust on the tail gate. I do however, have it in the other common place at the back corner of the rain gutter above the windows. It's just small spots about the size of a nickel but still it's there. My hood and roof are starting to fade some so I'm thinking of having it painted. Hopefully I can get the rust at the rain gutters fixed and then try and keep it from happening again. You know you sure don't see many of the SAE Broncos. Anyone know how many were made and if there is an estimate of how many are still alive? Just curious.
The info that I have heard says 3000 were made...
Go to my MSN group in the above link for some more info I've found.
I'm hoping to start a registry sometime, if there are enough interested in submitting their info.
I've only seen one other locally. I used to pass it on the way to work heading the opposite direction. I also parked next to possibly the same one at Marsh one day... I probably confused him when he came back out. I didn't think to leave a note.
I've seen one - just one - since I really started noticing Broncos a couple years ago. It was in Las Vegas, and it was parked at a bar off the south end of the strip. That was about two years ago, and I haven't seen one since.
wozxxx86 - thanks! My girlfriend and I both love the truck. I can't get her to stop driving it!
